Material Composition of Biodegradable Bags


Biodegradable bags are usually made from materials such as cornstarch, potato starch, or polylactic acid (PLA), a plant-based plastic. Some biodegradable bags, however, are made from a mixture of traditional plastic (polyethylene) and additives that promote faster degradation. These bags are often referred to as "oxo-degradable" or "bio-based" plastics. The type of material used in the production of the bag greatly affects the decomposition rate.


Environmental Factors


The environment in which biodegradable bags are disposed of plays a crucial role in determining how long it will take for them to decompose. Most biodegradable bags are designed to break down when exposed to elements like oxygen, sunlight, moisture, and microbial activity. Optimal decomposition typically occurs in industrial composting facilities that maintain high temperatures and controlled conditions, allowing the bags to degrade in a matter of a few months.

 

In less controlled environments such as landfills, where oxygen and microbial activity are limited, biodegradable bags can take much longer to break down. In landfills, even plant-based biodegradable bags may take years to decompose because these environments are typically designed to limit decomposition in order to prevent the release of greenhouse gases. Without sufficient oxygen or moisture, the decomposition process slows down significantly.

 

Home Composting and Natural Environments


In a home composting setting, biodegradable bags made from natural materials such as cornstarch may decompose within a few months, provided they are exposed to the right conditions, including adequate moisture, oxygen, and microbial activity. However, some biodegradable bags are only certified for industrial composting and may not break down as easily in a home composting bin. It's important for consumers to check the packaging and certifications of the biodegradable bags they use to ensure that they are suitable for home composting.

 

If biodegradable bags end up in natural environments, such as oceans or forests, the decomposition rate can vary even more. In water or marine environments, biodegradable plastics designed for terrestrial environments may take years or may not degrade effectively at all. Ocean temperatures are typically lower than the temperatures required to break down biodegradable bags quickly, further prolonging the decomposition process.
